  • The 3 most important things to remember when playing guitar;
    • Playing in time
    • Playing in tune
    • Being able to communicate with other players musically
  • Know your root note names on strings 5 & 6 off by heart so that you can easily play and identify ‘E’ and ‘A’ shape barre’ chords (major / minor / minor 7th / major 7th / dominant 7th )
 
  • Know you main open chords
    • C, A, G, E, D, Major
    • A, E, D, B minor
    • A, D, E, G, C, B 7th
  • Know the 3 main scale shapes and sounds
    • The ‘Pentas’ major & minor pentatonics, and blues scale.
    • The Major scale
    • The Minor scale (Aeolian mode)
  • Learn what time signature you are listening / playing in, and be able to map out a simple chord chart – buy a digital metronome for practicing with.
  • Spend time to tune your guitar accurately and always keep your strings clean and replace regularly – buy a good digital tuner & learn how to use it.
  • Don’t waste money on cheap inferior equipment, it’s a waste of good money in the long term with any musical instrument – ensure all electrics are safe.
